Sublime with Rome, Screeching Weasel, Less Than Jake, Grade and The Planet Smashers in Quebec City for Envol et Macadam
June 11, 2014
The 19th edition of the Envol et Macadam festival will be held from September 4th to 6th. Presented in collaboration with Tremblay beer, the event will take place at the Îlot Fleurie site beneath the Dufferin-Montmorency highway, as well as in various venues in the Nouvo Saint Roch neighbourhood. Throughout the three days of the festival, audiences will be able to enjoy an eclectic line-up presented in a unique urban setting while the heart of downtown Quebec City vibrates to the sound of alternative music.
Punk rock is on the menu with Sublime With Rome, Screeching Weasel, Less than Jake, Grade and The Planet Smashers.
The organizers of Envol et Macadam are proud to announce that Sublime With Rome will be playing in Quebec City for the first time. Sublime was one of the most influential groups of the 1990s. With their subtle and perfectly blended mix of ska, reggae and punk rock, they left their mark on many music lovers. Following the death of their front man in 1996, the Californian group disappeared from the scene until 2009, when they made a comeback under the name Sublime with Rome. The latter brought together Sublime veteran bassist Eric Wilson with drummer John Freese. Rome Ramirez became the group’s singer and guitarist, and they released the album Yours Truly in 2011. On stage, the group promises an energetic performance full of new material as well as the Sublime classics that moved a generation.
Also headlining the festival will be Screaching Weasel, another group who is well known to punk rock fans. The band formed in Chicago in 1986 and since then, they have released over a dozen albums and have toured extensively. They are well known for having inspired a number of artists who were important figures of the punk rock scene in the 1990s. Ben Weasel has fronted the group since its beginnings and is as scathing as ever. After taking several breaks over the years, the group is back and better than ever. Their performance at the Envol et Macadam festival is definitely not to be missed by their fans!
Less Than Jake will also be part of the line-up for the 19th edition of the Envol et Macadam festival. It will be difficult, if not impossible, to resist the Florida group’s ska punk hymns. Since the middle of the 90s, the group has released eight album of energetic material. With their unique and sunny sound, they will surely bring smiles to all those in attendance at the Îlot Fleurie site. Catchy melodies, fast-paced rhythms, a horn section: all of the ingredients are there to create a festive evening!
The Canadian group Grade will also take the festival’s stage. From the mid-90s to the early 2000s, the group from Burlington, Ontario released a number of albums that were well received by critics of the genre. They gained visibility by supporting many different groups on tour. Their sound is rooted in hardcore punk, and they have achieved in this heavy music a perfect balance between musical intensity and melody.
Finally, ska ambassadors The Planet Smashers will perform during the Quebec finals of the Planetrox competition that will be held this year at the Complexe Méduse. The group formed in Montreal in 1994 and became known for their high-energy performances and ska pop sound. After 20 years in the business, the Planet Smashers have made their mark and have sold over 250,000 albums.
The PLANETROX project is an international competition, and it’s mission is to discover the best up-and-coming groups from each of the participating countries and to present them to the Envol et Macadam festival audience. The 2014 edition brings together groups from ten invited countries and musicians from fifteen different international cities to perform on the festival’s stages in Quebec City next September.
The auditions have been going well on the provincial, national and international levels. The Quebec regional finals were held over the past few weeks. The finalists are:
Awake in The Noise (winner of the Rimouski finals)
Meet The Mailman (winner of the Quebec City finals)
Bladies (winner of the Victoriaville finals)
Goodbye Sparta (winner of the Saguenay finals)
Code 40-11 (winner of the Montreal finals)
These regional finalists will compete for the title of provincial finalist during the festival’s opening night on September 4th at the Complexe Méduse. The provincial finalist will get the chance to play on one of the main stages at the Îlot Fleurie site alongside the finalists from the ten other participating countries.
